EnglishElectricModels presents! Continuing our mission to make classic kits of classic jets, we are delighted to announce our lovely little Mirage50 part kit  - a near scale but quick build Dassault Mirage III for 50mm EDF.

We began our Mirage 50 design looking to create a quick build model that captured the look and performance of the full-size classic Mirage III but would build very quickly and easily for those wanting to get in the air quickly or for those starting out in building who want to develop some experience.

To that end we opted for a sheet wing – for which a delta is perfect having great natural strength (paper planes work for a reason!) but also in this scale would be quite a thin wing anyway.

One issue with sheet wings can be a tendency to warp so we have included a couple of design features deliberately to stop this happening – carbon tube reinforcement running down the wing to provide great stiffness and strength – and use of 5mm balsa sheet fuselage sides joined to the wing which again stop any tendency for the structure to warp.

The sheet sides also provide a great reinforced hand hold area for underarm launching which works really well to get deltas in the air.

We also wanted to remove any planking from this quick build.  We just love planking but sometimes you need a break – planking is great for curvaceous fuselages but we wanted to use sheet wherever possible so have broken the fuselage down into a number of zones which are covered in rolled sheet.  Despite the fact that this is a slight simplification over the continuous curves of the full size – the end result is spectacular and has produced a beautiful model, way beyond expectations. But of course planking is still an option!

The other trick we added to really capture the look is to have an angled leading edge. With a bit of sanding this really looks like the cambered leading edge of the full size and the sheet wing looks really three dimensional.  The camber at the leading edge will increase suction and lift as well.

The production kits have evolved quite a lot since building our prototype.

The original has been flying with a 3S 50mm EDF unit.  We moved the fan unit back during the build as it needed to be further back than expected to get the C of G in the right place. For the production kits we moved it back further again to the current position, in order to accommodate heavier 4S batteries.

The other change over the prototype was a redesign of the internal ducting – the intake ducts stay parallel for longer, again to create more space to allow larger batteries to be carried.

Like our other designs, the use of carbon tubes running the fuselage length provides great strength and a guaranteed true aligned structure.

The result is a fantastic little model - performance on 4S is stunning; the balance is perfect with no ballast needed, and the structure is well up to taking a few knocks.

This is a part kit, which provides the major and time-consuming components to build a scale R/C EDF jet.   It contains laser cut ply and balsa parts:

  • Poplar Ply (lightweight ply) Fuselage formers
  • 6mm balsa wing sections, intake sections
  • 5mm balsa fuselage sides, fin, elevons
  • 2.5 mm balsa sheet nose sides and underside pieces
  • 1.5mm ply control horns
  • Carbon Tube
    • 2 off 5mm dia x 645mm long
    • 1 off 5mm dia x 330mm long tail aligner
  • Vac form canopy
  • Plans
  • Instructions

To finish it you will need to provide:

  • 1.5mm Sheet balsa
  • Art card for ducting
  • Covering and finishing materials – Oracover on prototype
